NHS workforce professionals and HR colleagues are being asked to fill in an online sonography appraisal. The online form covers current and the suggested future of education and training approaches, to understand which are most viable for local service delivery.
Issues with current arrangements:
- Ultrasound in the NHS is complex and diverse - often specialised across different healthcare services.
- There is increased demand for services and non-obstetric ultrasound waiting times.
- General sonography is not formally recognised as a professional role or identified separately on the Electronic Staff Record (ESR).
- Sonography is currently on the migration advisory committee's shortage occupation list - there is a need to address current UK shortages.
- Education and training of the workforce has largely been developed unsystematically, often in response to specific service and clinical needs.
- There is a distinct lack of direct entry pre-registration routes into sonography.
- Various post-registration training options exist that are not all appropriately accredited.
- There is a shortage of clinical placements for individuals training to become a sonographer.
