NHS Leadership Academy - Edward Jenner Foundation and Advanced

The Edward Jenner programme is the first port of call if you’re looking to build a strong foundation of leadership skills that can help enhance your confidence and competence in your role.

The programme will support individuals to develop essential leadership skills; open to all NHS staff, this programme leads to an NHS Leadership Academy award in Leadership Foundations.

If you want to feel more able to deal with the daily challenges of working in healthcare, better equipped to care for patients, lead services and provide leadership for those around you – supporting them to do their job better – the Edward Jenner programme is for you.

Who is the programme for?
This programme is for all colleagues who are new to leadership and are exploring what it means. It also acts as a preliminary learning programme for newly qualified nursing and clinical staff. Whether you’re new to health and care or an aspiring leader at the start of your journey, you’re the perfect candidate.

The Edward Jenner programme is for you if you’re:
  • From any clinical or non-clinical background
  • A newly-qualified clinician
  • New to/returning to a clinical role
  • Aspiring to a leadership role
Overview
The programme has been designed with health and care staff, for everyone working in a health and care context. Highly practical and patient-focused, it’s a great way to understand the purpose, challenges and culture of the NHS. It’s flexible and enlightening, helping you get a fresh perspective on the impact you have on the patient experience – either directly or indirectly.

The programme has been redesigned to offer even more flexibility; Launch takes up to five hours and Foundations is designed to be studied over six weeks.
  • The first two parts – Launch and Foundations – are free to access and based online

Edward Jenner - Advanced

Did you know that the NHS Leadership Academy’s Edward Jenner programme now has an Advanced level?  For those who have successfully completed Launch and Foundations, Advanced is the next stage of the leadership journey.
Edward Jenner Advanced will enable participants to build on what they have already learned from the Edward Jenner programme and can lead to an Academy award upon completion.

Where Launch and Foundations focuses on the individual as leader, Advanced looks ‘up and out’, with a view to getting the most out of a leader’s people and an understanding of how both leader and team fit into the broader system. The aim is an increased understanding of the system, an increased ability to impact positively in the system and a greater understanding of how to unlock a team’s potential and performance.

Advanced will be delivered using a blended approach of on-line learning and 3 face to face workshops over 3 months with 2 options to choose from: Building or Exploration. The cost for the programme is £350.

Building provides you with a range of new leadership areas to consider. There will be access to videos, readings and online discussions to learn from. We’ll be helping you to experience some of the principles described in the online content and understand what they mean for you in your situation.

Exploration looks at the same areas but instead you will explore your own organisation in more depth, using a structured field visit approach and then use the content and workshops to make sense of what you’ve seen and experienced. Also to share your learning from this with other colleagues on the programme.
