NHS Staff Survey

Why do we participate in the NHS Survey?
The NHS Survey is an opportunity for organisations to survey their staff in a consistent and systematic way. This makes it possible to build a picture of staff experience to compare and monitor change over time and to identify variations between staff groups.  All NHS Trusts are required to participate in the survey and the Trust can be bench-marked against other similar organisations.

Why do we want to improve our response rates?
The Trust was below the national average for responses in the 2018 survey and it is important that we have feedback from as many staff as possible on their experience of working in the Trust.  The higher the response rate the better quality of findings and the more confident we can be of the accuracy of the findings.

Will my responses be confidential?
Yes.  You will post your completed questionnaire directly to the independent contractor (Quality Health).  Southport and Ormskirk Trust does not have access to the completed questionnaires.  The report that is sent back to the Trust presents the survey findings.

If it is confidential why is there an ID number and bar code?
Every participating employee is given a unique ID number so that your name and contact details are not on the questionnaire.  Survey contractors use the ID numbers and bar codes to ensure the reminder letters are only sent to staff who have not returned a questionnaire.

Will there be any incentives for completing the questionnaire?
If you attend one of the road shows you can complete your questionnaire in a quiet area where refreshments will be available.

Why is it so long?
The survey is a national survey and the Trust does not have any control over the number of questions asked. The questions are designed to provide feedback in specific areas which are
  • Your Job
  • Your Managers
  • Your Health Well-being and Safety at Work
  • Your Personal Development
  • Your Organisation
The questionnaire also asks for some background information with regards to age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious belief, disability, occupational group and how long you have worked for the organisation, this is used to help the NHS and the Trust to understand whether different groups of people have different experience of working in the NHS.

Will I get time to complete the survey in work?
Your line manager should make the appropriate arrangements to fit in with the operational needs of the department.  You may also bring your survey along to one of our roadshows to complete the survey in a quiet area and ask any questions that you may have.  You can also complete the survey at home if you wish to do this.

What will happen after the survey?
After the survey deadline has passed in December 2019, the contractor will do the analysis which will be uploaded onto the national database with all of the other Trust results.  The results are usually published at the beginning of March. A report will be sent to the Trust and an overarching action plan developed in line with the results.  Local CBU specific plans will also be developed for delivery in 2020.  The Trust will be looking for staff to become involved with delivering the actions.

Further information on the NHS Staff Survey can be found on the FAQ’s section here.

Is this the same as the Staff Friends and Family Test?
No. The survey is more in depth and is a national survey.  The Staff Friends and Family Test is a pulse/temperature check which gives us ongoing feedback.

We value your opinion and feedback, please complete and return your survey when you receive it.
