nursing & midwifery

At Southport & Ormskirk NHS Trust we recognise the valuable contribution of all staff in the delivery of high quality healthcare for our patients and their families. We believe that providing the appropriate training and development for our staff is essential in achieving this.

We wish to support nurses and midwives so that they can be increasingly independent and innovative, so that they can exercise higher levels of decision-making and have the ability to assess and apply evidence-based care safely.

We ensure that our staff are equipped with the right skills and capabilities, creating a more flexible and competent workforce for the Trust. We are fully committed in supporting newly registered nurses and midwives during their preceptorship period so that they can develop their confidence as professionals, refine their skills, values and behaviours and continue their journey of life-long learning.

The Trust has utilised the Department of Health Preceptorship Framework for Nursing and Midwifery to support a structured programme of preceptorship; this will ensure consistency across the organisation, reduce variability in practice and ensure the delivery of high quality care; it will also facilitate smooth transition from student to autonomous professional.

The Nurse Education Team work collaboratively with Edge Hill and UCLAN Universities to develop and grow our own education culture. In concert with our Practice Education Facilitators, we work with pre-employment providers such as local schools and colleges developing ways to improve opportunities for cadet nurses, work experience candidates and to enhance our pre-degree nurses' overall experience and progression. We deliver clinical induction programmes, the care certificate for our healthcare assistants and have a joined up approach with our in-house trainers to deliver clinical skills training.
