Undergraduate medical education

As a medical student on placement at Southport & Ormskirk NHS Trust you will experience a huge range of patient care across most clinical specialties. You will be provided with teaching and training by nationally and internationally renowned consultant specialists, and our approachable medical undergraduate administrative team will be on hand to offer support.

Both our hospital sites provide education and training for medical undergraduates studying at the University of Liverpool.

Clinical placements occur in years 4-5 of the curriculum and include sessions on clinical, practical and communication skills. Students are provided with group teaching for each module and also localised teaching from consultants, registrars and junior doctors.
Fourth year students train for one (academic) year, in the hospital and  they benefit from a comprehensive programme of teaching, pastoral support and practical experience in Medicine, Surgery and Specialities. The students end of this academic year take their Final LOCAS exams.

Fifth year students spend their final year on block placements within the hospital on A&E, Ward based (Surgery/Medicine) and specialised attachments whilst working on assignments on their eportfolio. Through positive experience, they often remain with us for their FY1.
Both years complete Clinical skills and Pharmacy sessions in accordance to their curriculum.

Our teaching programmes are delivered by a wide range of medical consultants, nurses and therapists. Education is provided in a variety of settings and through a range of learning interventions, enabling students to learn in a way that best suits them.

We have excellent facilities for medical students on placement, including designated lecture and teaching rooms, library, and common rooms. Students greatly value their time training in our clinical skills and simulation environment. The facilities on offer enable them to practice and gain competence in a range of the clinical skills they will need when qualified.

Students are actively encouraged to provide feedback via the Student Forum to continually improve our services for current and future students.
