NMC agrees to regulate new nursing associate role

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has formally agreed to a request from the Department of Health to be the regulator for the new nursing associate role.

Jackie Smith, NMC Chief Executive and Registrar of the NMC said: “After a thoughtful and thorough discussion, the NMC’s Council has agreed to a request from the Department of Health to be the regulator for the new nursing associate role.

“The Council recognised that there is strong support for the regulation of nursing associates and I have always maintained that the public would expect any role with nursing in the title to be regulated."

“As an organisation we are well-equipped to regulate nursing associates and this is a positive endorsement of our progress. We will continue to work closely with stakeholders including the Department of Health and Health Education England to ensure the successful development and implementation of this new role.”

Health Minister Philip Dunne said: “Robust professional regulation is important, so patients can continue to be confident they are receiving high quality care and I am delighted with today’s decision by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

“The introduction of the Nursing Associate role is key to strengthening the future NHS workforce and we look forward to working with them and other key stakeholders to ensure that appropriate safeguards are put in place for this new profession.”

get ready for the training needs analysis 2017/18...

The 2017/18 Training Needs Analysis (TNA) will be circulated to senior managers on the 1st February for completion by CBU or Corporate Service by the 1st March 2017.

The purpose of a TNA is to gather information from each service area so that we can get an overview of the learning needs of all staff across the Trust. By having a joined up approach between departments and sites we can understand what common themes are required Trust-wide making it easier to plan training and development programmes, allocate budgets, provide training to those who need it as a priority, and make the whole process easier and fairer. By understanding the full needs of the Trust we can also look at alternative ways of getting more staff through sessions and have a better buying power with external training providers.

N.B. The TNA does not guarantee funding for courses.

RESPONSIVE WORKFORCE REDUCES AGENCY SPEND IN DERBYSHIRE

23/1/2017

Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust (DCHS) developed a responsive workforce team as a way of meeting fluctuations in service demand while finding a better way of using the money spent on agency staff.
Advertised as Band 6 nursing roles, they recruited staff with a range of skills and experience who were engaged in a training programme developed specifically for the role.
In addition to achieving financial savings the initiative has proved to be an effective way of sharing good practice between teams within the trust. Patients moving from in-patient to community-based services are seen as having a better journey with fewer episodes of resubmission being reported.

A NEW ONLINE RESOURCE FROM ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

23/1/2017

A new online resource AHPs into Action: Using AHPs to transform health, care and wellbeing has been launched. The resource contains contributions from over 16,000 individuals across healthcare and the public during 2016.
The new resource will be used to inform and inspire AHPs, leaders and decision makers across the health and care system, as it provides:
  •          a clear view of the transformative potential of AHPs
  •          53 examples of innovative AHP practice
  •          a framework to help develop local delivery plans.
Early in 2016, AHPs, the health and social care workforce and the public were invited to share their ideas and opinions about how AHPs could contribute to transforming health, care and wellbeing via crowdsourcing, an online interactive forum.
NHS Employers has worked in collaboration with NHS England to produce a short animation demonstrating how all of this comes together and how it will work.
Suzanne Rastrick, chief allied health professions officer at NHS England, said “AHPs are the third largest workforce in health and care in England and AHPs into Action sets out their collective commitments and priorities to deliver significant impacts for patients, their carers and communities”.
Sir Bruce Keogh, national medical director, NHS England will launch the next stage of AHPs shaping future care on Tuesday 17 January.
You can get involved with the launch by:
  • reading Suzanne's blog previewing the launch
  • tuning into @WeAHPs and watch through Periscope
  • following #AHPsintoAction.
Find out more about allied health professionals and access the new resource AHPs into Action: Using AHPs to transform health, care and wellbeing.
