Publication of 'Improving the physical health of people with mental health problems: Action for mental health nurses'

27/5/2016

Dear Colleagues,

We are delighted to announce the publication of 'Improving the physical health of people with mental health problems: Action for mental health nurses’ on Friday 20 May 2016, on www.gov.uk/dh.

The document will be launched by Dr Ben Thomas, Mental Health, Learning Disability and Dementia Care Professional Officer, at the ‘Parity of Esteem: Catalyst for Change’ event for Mental Health and Learning Disability Nursing Directors and Leads, being held at the University of West London on the same day.

We would like to say a big thank you to all of you, for helping us develop this resource, which aims to raise awareness and support mental health nurses to provide better physical care for mental health service users by tackling some of the key risk factors for physical illnesses.

Your support has been invaluable in ensuring that the resource is evidence based and includes good practice examples that can be adopted by mental health nurses across the country in all care settings.

We received many good practice examples, which unfortunately we were not able to use as we were limited to only two per action area. We would therefore like to encourage you to submit your good practice examples to the Better Care Exchange so that they can be shared with colleagues across the country.

Finally, we have printed a limited number of copies of the document, so if you would like a copy, please email me with your full address and I will arrange for a copy to be posted to you.

Best wishes
Leoni

This toolkit has been designed to help you to support young people joining your team. It contains advice, tools and resources that will help you to recruit young people, support them to stay in their roles and become a valuable asset to your organisation and the wider NHS.
The toolkit has been developed with input from NHS organisations and groups of 16-24 year olds.
We have also developed a toolkit for HR teams. The resources in the HR toolkit are complementary to those in this toolkit and are designed to be used together.

HEE Response to Nursing Associate Consultation

26/5/2016

Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted to advise you that our report on the consultation regarding the introduction of the Nursing Associate role is now available on the Health Education England website: : https://www.hee.nhs.uk/our-work/developing-our-workforce/nursing/new-support-role-nursing.

You will know the importance of this initiative, designed to build capacity to care and capability to treat across the health and social care system. Our public consultation ran from 28 January for six weeks and we received over 1,000 responses from people and organisations across health, social care, commissioning, education and policy, as well as from Assistant Practitioners, carers and Registered Nurses. Therefore, I am convinced that the outcome represents the views of a wide range of people and organisations.

I would like to express my personal thanks to everyone who took part in the consultation, sharing their views, expertise and experience. In particular, I would like to express my thanks to Jackie Smith, Chief Executive and Registrar at the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for her continued support and guidance throughout the process.

Our attention now turns to delivery. Our goal is to implement the new role and recruit 1,000 students for a January 2017 start.

We will run five events in July across England, where we will invite people and organisations to help us draw up the scope of practice for the role, and we hope you will join us. The dates and locations are set out below: we will open for bookings soon, via Eventbrite, and more information will be available on our website.

1 July             Birmingham
15 July            London
20 July            Manchester
22 July            Reading
29 July            Newcastle

As always, I welcome your comments and hope that you can join us for a Twitter chat hosted by @WeNurses on 7 June (8-9pm) using the hashtag #shapeofcaring. We are also running a webinar, the details of which will be available at our website
.
Yours sincerely,
Lisa

New framework for nursing, midwifery and care staff

26/5/2016

On 18th May 2016,  Professor Jane Cummings, chief nursing officer for England, launched the leading change, adding value framework via a live streaming event. The framework encourages nursing, midwifery and care staff to identify where and why there is variation in preventing ill health, care and efficiency.

Professor Jane Cummings said: "The leadership potential in our workforce to manage the challenges of today and shape the future is boundless. From addressing differences in the incidence of pressure ulcers, to changing pathways of care and support in diagnosing diabetes – nursing, midwifery and care staff are ideally placed to be leading that change and demonstrating their value.”
The framework was developed by collecting evidence from frontline staff, the public, academics and nurse leaders from across the health and care system. Following an extensive consultation and engagement process, the ten commitments were also developed to help to ensure better experience for patients, outcomes and use of resources.

Ten commitments

1. We will promote a culture where improving the population’s health is a core component of the practice of all nursing, midwifery and care staff.
2. We will increase the visibility of nursing and midwifery leadership and input in prevention.
3. We will work with individuals, families and communities to equip them to make informed choices and manage their own health.
4. We will be centred on individuals experiencing high value care.
5. We will work in partnership with individuals, their families, carers and others important to them.
6. We will actively respond to what matters most to our staff and colleagues.
7. We will lead and drive research to evidence the impact of what we do.
8. We will have the right education, training and development to enhance our skills, knowledge and understanding.
9. We will have the right staff in the right places and at the right time.
10. We will champion the use of technology and informatics to improve practice, address unwarranted variations and enhance outcomes.

Revalidation update

25/5/2016

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has published information on the success of the first round of revalidation, which began in April.

Latest figures show that 90.48 per cent (14,362 of 15,873) of nurses and midwives who were due to revalidate, have successfully done so and renewed their registration with the NMC. 1,401 nurses and midwives have left the register but the NMC is confident this number is in line with normal April attrition rate data.

A small number of applications (106) have been granted extensions or are subject to additional checks by the NMC.

We are now only three weeks out from the NHS Confederation annual conference and exhibition 2016, taking place 15-17 June in Manchester.
Confed conference is unique in bringing the whole health and care system together under one roof. It is therefore an unmissable opportunity, especially as we are all striving to deliver a more integrated, patient centred service, to share best practice, debate the key issues and network with leaders from all parts of the system. It is also a wonderful chance to hear from a wide range of national and international health experts. Here’s an overview of what’s on offer this year:

HEE Quality Framework for Education and Training

24/5/2016

Through the 2015/16 Mandate, HEE committed to developing a single HEE Quality Framework and overarching quality strategy for education and training, and these documents are now published and can be found here on the external HEE website.  There is also a one page 'Quality Standards' document to provide a succinct overview.
The framework sets out the expectations for a consistent, multiprofessional approach to improving quality within the work-based learning environment,  and HEE will work locally across the North West with partner placement and education providers to drive quality improvement and ensure that innovation and best practice is celebrated and shared across the country. The standards are also clear that patients are partners in developing and supporting education and training, setting out that providers proactively engage with patients, service users, carers, citizens and learners to shape curricula, assessments and course content to support an ethos of patient partnership within the learning environment.

During 2016-17, HEE NW will work with placement and education provider partners to test the framework, standards and the National Education and Training Survey in order to refine and build the evidence base that underpins it. Implementation plans are in development, and these will be shared with colleagues in the near future.
