Professional regulation reform events - secure your place now

22/6/2016

The Department of Health (DH) is running a series of UK wide pre-consultation events on the reform of UK health professional regulation. Medical directors, nurse directors and HR professionals are invited to contribute to how professional regulation can improve patient and public protection, benefiting patients, registrants and employers.

When and where
  • 11 July 2016, London, Nursing and Midwifery Council Offices from 11:00am - 2:30pm
  • 13 July 2016, Leeds, Horizon Leeds, LS10 1JR from 11:00am - 2:30pm

Purpose
Through the use of presentations, plenary sessions and table discussions the DH wishes to test with stakeholders if:
  • they have identified the relevant issues regarding professional regulation
  • the questions posed will suitably address these issues.

Background
The Mid-Staffordshire inquiry identified areas for improvement within health and care professional regulation. It recognised that there is confusion around the roles and responsibilities of the professional regulators and the need for them to share information and cooperate more effectively in their overall objective of improving patient and public protection. The current legislative framework inhibits progress towards these objectives.

The Law Commissions of England and Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland reviewed the regulation of health and (in England) social care professional regulation. Combined with the challenges found within the report into Mid-Staffordshire, the Law Commissions reported on 4 April 2014 and made recommendations for reform.

The DH published a ministerial statement on 15 December 2015 announcing the intention to launch a public consultation on the reform of professional regulation in Autumn 2016.

The consultation will aim to simplify professional regulation and introduce greater consistency. It will also seek to identify policies aligned to the UK government's priorities of improved regulation, cost effectiveness and greater autonomy for the regulatory bodies, maintaining and improving the focus on public protection.

These events will help ensure that employer views and that of other stakeholders, are taken into account, benefiting policy development and consultation processes.

How do I book?
Numbers at each event are limited therefore you are encouraged to email HRDListening@dh.gsi.gov.uk as soon as possible to secure your place. The closing date for submitting your interest is 30 June 2016.
